Should You Design Email Inside Klaviyo or Mailchimp? An Honest Split
When the ESP editor is enough - and when a dedicated design studio earns its keep before you import HTML.

Quick answer
Design inside your ESP when sends are simple, one brand, and one reviewer. Use an external email design studio when you need Brand Kits, reusable blocks, immutable approvals, preflight gates, and clean HTML export to multiple senders - then import instead of rebuilding.
ESP editors improved. So did the complexity of brand systems and review chains. The question is not which editor has prettier buttons - it is where your team loses time.
Stay in the ESP when
- One brand, one team, few approvers.
- Templates are short and rarely reused.
- You never export to another sender.
Add a design studio when
- Reviewers need frozen versions and audit trails.
- Preflight must gate export.
- You hand HTML to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, or a transactional API.
Import beats rebuild
If you choose a studio, treat ESP layout tools as import targets - not places to recreate the same hero for the third time. See Hand off approved HTML.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Memo a Klaviyo replacement?
- No. Klaviyo sends and segments. Memo designs, reviews, and exports.
- Will Klaviyo edit my imported HTML?
- Some ESPs rewrite markup. Test import early and keep a known-good export from Memo.
- What about Mailchimp merge tags?
- Export with the correct merge syntax and validate with preview data before import.
- Can I use both?
- Yes - design in Memo, send through your ESP. That is the intended split.
