# Why Most Email Templates Drift Off Brand

Drift is a systems problem, not a discipline problem. Here is why templates wander - and how to stop it without more policy decks.

Every brand starts tidy. Then a campaign needs a slightly different blue, a one-off layout, a quick footer tweak. None of it is wrong in isolation. Together, it is drift.

## Drift comes from copying, not creating

When the fastest path to a new email is duplicating an old one, you inherit every past compromise. The “template” becomes archaeology - layers of deadlines, not decisions.

## More rules rarely fix it

Policy decks do not survive contact with Friday afternoon. What survives is tooling: a [Brand Kit](https://memo.ly/glossary/brand-kit.md) for color and type, [reusable blocks](https://memo.ly/glossary/reusable-block.md) for structure, and checks that catch slips before send.

## The fix is a source of truth

New work should draw from the system - not from whichever campaign performed best last quarter. That shift is boring and effective.

## Catch the rest with checks

Even with a good system, contrast and link failures slip through. [Preflight](https://memo.ly/docs/understand-email-preflight.md) is the safety net that keeps drift from reaching the inbox.

> Example (fictional): Apple (sample brand)’s emails diverged across three contributors until they consolidated into one Brand Kit and six blocks. Drift stopped because the easy path became the on-brand path.

## FAQ

### Is template drift inevitable?

Not if copying is replaced by reusable structure and shared brand definitions. Drift is a workflow design problem.

### Should we delete old templates?

Archive campaigns you will not reuse. Keep a small block library and Brand Kit as the only starting points.

### What about one-off campaigns?

One-offs happen. They should not become the new default source for the next one-off.

### How does Memo reduce drift?

Brand Kits, reusable blocks, version history, and preflight keep decisions centralized and catch regressions early.
